McLean’s Swing Fixes

Presented by Master Instructor Joey Wuertemberger

How to create instant clubhead speed.

If you feel like you are not creating enough clubhead speed with your driver try this simple drill to promote clubhead acceleration. Sometimes when a player concentrates so hard on the ball, they decelerate through the impact zone and never follows through to a full finish.  Before you swing, imagine the shaft hitting your neck at the finish position.  This image will encourage you to whip the club through the ball at high speed and pick up instant distance.  Harry “Lighhorse” Copper originally created this drill and I have personally watched Jim McLean use this drill with many students.  Try it and you will be amazed the added distance you will gain!! How to eliminate shots on the heel.

If you are constantly hitting shots with either the heel or neck of the club, this simple drill will improve your swing instantly.  The goal to this drill is to return the club to a square impact position and hit more consistent shots.  Simply place two balls on the ground, side by side, approximately three inches apart.  Set-Up to the ball farthest from you.  Swing back and then on the downswing try hitting the inside ball or miss the original ball you addressed.  Some golfers might feel an inside loop, while others might feel the hands in closer to the body at impact.  You may even feel something totally different.  This is one of many great drills that I personally learned from Jim McLean when I was Jim’s personal assistant.  Come by the Jim McLean Golf Center in Fort Worth for more great tips.

Improve your green reading and distance control with these two simple drills.

Presented by Master Instructor Joey Wuertemberger

Putting well doesn't have anything to do with how big or small you are or how far you can hit a driver.  To build a more consistent repeatable stroke you need to develop a feel for break and distance control.  I was fortunate to learn first hand from Jim McLean in 2006 as his personal assistant.  Try these two drills to improve visualization and feel for putting.

  1. Place numerous balls or a string on the correct line.  Visualize the ball rolling on the correct path and dropping in the hole.
  2. Hit numerous putts and adjust your speed or the line as needed.

golf tipJust remember you’re not going to be perfectly consistent with every putt, but this drill will improve your green reading abilities and will take your mind off of making a perfect stroke.

golf tipAfter visualizing the arc of the stroke, place balls at 1-2 foot increments on your intended line.  Start at the first ball and work your way back to the last ball.  This will improve your speed and line which are the two key ingredients to holing a lot of putts!
